Iodine

Iodine is a nonmetal halogen element, named for the Greek word for "violet". At room temperature it is a solid blue-black substance, but when heated it transforms into a purple gas, hence its name. Although it is quite a rare element, iodine is very important for biology and health and is produced in thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism. It is also useful in medicine as a radio-contrast agent and a disinfectant.
