Magnesium is a light, strong alkaline earth metal. It can be burned to produce a brilliant white flame that is used in flares and fireworks. Magnesium is very important in biology as it forms the centre of the chlorophyll molecule, which traps sunlight and allows plants to transform it into energy, forming the basic for the food chain and nearly all life on Earth.
